25-pounder gun in action on the River Spey, October 1942

25-pounder gun of 52nd Divisional Artillery, Royal Artillery, in action after crossing the River Spey, Inverness-shire, using a portable bridge constructed by the Royal Engineers, October 1942. From May 1942 until June 1944, the 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division intensively trained for specialised mountain warfare before reorganising and training in airlanding operations; however, it spent its main combat deployment fighting in the heavily flooded, below-sea-level polders of the Low Countries.
